The news of the death of Roberto Stella, 67, came at dawn on Wednesday from the Sant'Anna hospital in Como. His condition seemed to have stabilized after being admitted to the intensive care unit last Friday, although then it deteriorated rapidly overnight.
Stella was one of the first doctors in Italy to contract this virus that originated in China while healing Italian patients in the Lombardy region, the one most affected by COVID-19, which has left more than 800 people dead in the country and more than 12,000 total infections, according to the last official balance.
General practitioner, among the positions he held was also that of member of the National Observatory of Training in General Medicine and expert of the Superior Council of Health. Graduated in Medicine in 1978 from the University of Milan, he specialized in general hematology in Pavia and was a member of the National Commission for Continuing Medical Education and national president-president of Snamid, a scientific society of general medicine.
Married with two children, Roberto Stella lived in Busto Arsizio, where he worked in a shared medical practice with other colleagues, one of whom, like him, tested positive for coronavirus.
